Humanitarian need is growing exponentially but the capacity to address it is not. Examples of the costs of current humanitarian operations will demonstrate the impossibility of simply continuing to grow response capacity by a “more of the same” approach.
This is a problem that we are all wresting with and Jane welcomes the thoughts of the Manchester audience. This event will be a dynamic event with audience engagement rather than a formal panel session, in order to try and draw out the issues. In this session Jane will explore why "partnership" could be the answer, the challenges, and propose a principled approach to decision making.
A Humanities graduate, Dr Jane Cocking was given an Outstanding Alumna Award for her humanitarian work this summer. Outstanding Alumni Awards are presented to alumni who have achieved distinction in their profession; or through exemplary service to the University or the wider community; or through outstanding service of a personal or humanitarian nature. Jane received the award for her work in responding to humanitarian crisis around the world.

All welcome, no registration necessary.
Abstract: The translation and interpreting professions are unregulated in most of the world, with no official requirements relating to qualifications, training, experience or continuing professional development (Pym et al., 2012:3). Translators and interpreters nonetheless perform crucial and challenging roles in sensitive settings, such as healthcare, diplomacy and policing. Other professionals who work in such settings typically receive formal training in ethics, subscribe to publicly available Codes of Practice or Codes of Ethics, are provided with support when faced with ethical challenges in their work, and are required to follow regular refresher training. Translators and interpreters are unlikely to have access to this sort of ethical infrastructure.
In this presentation, I argue that translators and interpreters need to reflect on ethical aspects of their practice, for reasons related to both professionalism and social responsibility. I further propose that specialists who work through translators and interpreters benefit from targeted training in the additional ethical challenges involved when communicating across languages, including sign languages. Recent initiatives to provide such training are outlined to show how practitioners from different professional backgrounds (translation and interpreting, healthcare, criminal justice and social work) can communicate and work more effectively with one another, and with service users.

The Speaker Series provides an opportunity to learn from and interact with scholars and practitioners in an informal and intimate environment in order to gain insights from people's own experiences.
Romea Bruegger, HCRI Alumna
"I was Born and grew up in Switzerland where I also got my Undergraduate in International Relations at t the University of Geneva. During that time I volunteered with the local Red Cross, and among other influences this experience convinced me to work in something more hand-on than the high-Level international Relations, which is why I decided to get into humanitarianism. I took a break to work and travel, before I started my Postgraduate in International Disaster Management at HCRI. Just weeks after handing in the final Dissertation in September 2014, I travelled to Mozambique to work as a Programme Assistant in the DRR PRoject of a local Community-based organization in Zambezia Province (I had Access to this opportunity thanks to the Support of Dr Bernard Manyena, HCRI Programme Director for International Disaster Management). After working for 3 months in DRR, and another 3 months in flood Response / relief work, my contract came to an end, and I started my current Job at Caritas Switzerland in April 2015, for which I have travelled to Haiti to supervise the closure of a reconstruction Project, and am now mainly working for the Nepal Programme".
Romea will speak about her experiences and journey so far, and engage with student questions about her journey on the course and beyond.

Is the Sun a god, a man, a woman, or simply a giant ball of hydrogen? Why does it tell fibs about its favourite painters? Is the Sun afraid of dying? Does it get depressed? And what does it REALLY think about us, and the solar system it is bound to care for?
Simon Barraclough (Poet in residence at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory) is your guide on a journey that mixes fact, fiction, horror, humour and joy. This hour-long show fuses words, film and songs that vary in style from the infectiously poppy to the broodingly intense. Simon (words, music, vocals, trumpet), Oliver Barrett (music, instruments and arrangements) and Jack Wake-Walker (film) have created an exciting and moving experience that reinvigorates and reimagines out neighbourhood star.
"Simon Barraclough illuminates solar science with a poet's gaze. Sunspots is a love letter from the third planet to it's parent star" - Marek Kukula Public Astronomer, Royal Observatory Greenwich

It will include American composer William Brooks’ celebrated response to Yeats’ work and experiments with music, Everlasting Voices, which will be performed by SoundWeave (Dublin duo Nuala Hayes and Paul Roe). This event will also include readings of Yeats’ poems and responses to them by poets Colette Bryce, Vona Groarke, John McAuliffe, Michael Symmons Roberts and Jeffrey Wainwright.

Prosecutors are eager to use rap verses penned by defendants because the violent lyrics tend to bolster their cases, helping them secure convictions. However, many defence lawyers, civil liberties groups and scholars are alarmed by the proliferation of the legal use of rap as evidence, which is often prejudicial. Supported by the University of Manchester’s Humanities Strategic Investment Fund, this workshop brings UK and US scholars from the fields of Law, Cultural Studies, Criminology, and American Studies together with lawyers and civil liberties representatives to interrogate the rise of the use of rap in legal cases. The workshop will have three themed roundtables:
1) rap lyrics presented by prosecutors as evidence of autobiography and confession of a crime
2) violent rap lyrics presented as evidence of threat or intent to commit crime
3) trends in policing and gang laws that criminalize rap culture.

But are writers thinking enough about how they connect with their readers? What are the social responsibilities of being a writer – and who should decide where the boundaries lie? Writers Centre Norwich and Manchester Literature Festival present the latest instalment in the thought-provoking National Conversation, a series of discussions about how we produce and engage with writing. Joanne Harris, the award-winning author of 14 novels including the bestselling Chocolat, Peaches for Monsieur le Curé and The Gospel of Loki, has created a modern manifesto for writers.
Join her and our hand-picked panel as we discuss why writers write, why readers read, and what needs to happen for both groups to flourish.

Since 2001, Kevin Malone has composed music about the events of 9/11 based on oral histories of witnesses recalling the events. Using a variety of sources from broadcast news bulletins to recording his own interviews with witnesses, Kevin has listened carefully to how people related their experiences - their exclamations, hesitant recollections, pensive asides - and then notated the music within their voices. He captured their pitches, rhythms and phrases to make instrumental melodies, resulting in tunes which sound more like speech than song, thus preserving the original emotions but without the words. Six of his seven compositions about 9/11 use this technique, and they have been featured in newspapers, television interviews, radio broadcasts, dozens of internet news outlets, embassies' publications, two CDs, Spotify, iTunes and through Amazon. The lecture includes historical background of the events, video and audio examples of the music, explanation of the technique, ethical issues, and a live demonstration with audience interaction on how this works.

Timeless melodies and soaring harmonies tip a hat to the pop nous of greats like The Beach Boys, Kate Bush and The Beatles as well as contemporary singer-songwriters like Rufus Wainwright and James Mercer.
Bird to Beast's debut album in 2013 was voted the best of the year by Manchester Evening News, they've been interviewed by Maconie and Radcliffe on BBC 6 Music and they now have a host of very successful festival performances under their belts.
Their second album will be released in autumn 2015.
"Beautiful, soaring harmonies that worked perfectly in the venue and charmed the whole audience" - Amy Clewes (Director, Royal Exchange Theatre and Manchester International Festival)

My target group are professional South Asians who have married out of their ethnic and linguistic group. I chose to focus on this group as they are currently under-represented in linguistic studies, and because I was interested in the relationship these ostensibly assimilated members of UK society had with their Heritage Languages. Further, I wanted to investigate the role that the Heritage Language now played in their lives as parents of dual-heritage children. I use a narrative approach, an umbrella term used to describe research which uses oral or written life-stories as data. In my case, I have elicited narratives from my participants through semi-structured interviews. I am analysing this data through two approaches: through a thematic analysis of certain discourse features, and through a close look at how the narratives are jointly-constructed within the interview.

Museums and Heritage at National Socialist Sites in Eastern Germany"A talk by Dr Matthew Philpotts (Department of German Studies) - part of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures open lecture series "Meet the Researchers".
In this lecture, I will present my research into the way museums select and present the German experience of dictatorship at three former National Socialist sites in eastern Germany:
1.Prora: the vast and now largely derelict holiday resort on the Baltic island of Rügen that was built in the mid-to-late 1930s by the National Socialist regime as part of its mass leisure programme, ‘Strength through Joy’ (Kraft durch Freude)
2.Peenemünde: the rocket-testing site and forced labour camp on the Baltic coast near the present-day Polish border where the V2 weapon was designed and a rocket first launched into space in October 1942
3.Alt-Rehse: the small village and country estate near Neubrandenburg that housed the training facilities for the National Socialist Medical Association and where instruction in theories of racial hygiene was delivered from May 1935.
As well as their geographical location in the eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the sites share three important features. Firstly, in all three cases the original purpose of the site advanced not only the specific aims of the Nazi regime and its ideology, but also an aspect of social or scientific modernity: mass tourism (Prora); rocket technology and space travel (Peenemünde); and medicine and applied genetics (Alt-Rehse). Secondly, the surviving infrastructure at all three sites was re-used after 1945 in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the subsequent East German socialist dictatorship. And, finally, at all three sites the original buildings and their remains are now being preserved or commemorated in some form of museum and related heritage practices. These shared features make these sites an intriguing case study through which to examine how museums and heritage construct narratives about the German past. My research explores the construction of those narratives through a variety of media and on a variety of levels: the personal narratives of individual perpetrators, victims, and witnesses; the public narratives of German ‘collective memory’; and the conceptual narratives (e.g. totalitarianism, resistance, modernisation) through which historians have sought to make sense of the twentieth-century German dictatorships and their relationship to our modern, democratic present.

The January 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris led to a nationwide re-appraisal of the ‘republican’ values of universalism, humanism and integration, and to the symbolic foregrounding of the term ‘republic/republican’ in official discourse, not least in the naming of the ‘Marche de la République’ on 11 January 2015, led by the Socialist president, and the rebranding of the Conservative party (formerly the UMP) as ‘Les Républicains’ in May. Nonetheless, the last 25 years have also seen a growing criticism of the very notion of republicanism, as different sections of the French population (and some critics abroad) underline the shortcomings of the French Republic as an institution, especially in relation to the economic integration of post-colonial migrants and to the cultural expression of France’s Muslim population. Many, in fact, now argue that the French Republic needs less, rather than more, ‘republicanism’. To contextualise the terms of this debate, this lecture will return to the basics of French national identity by defining republicanism and its core values (humanism, secularism, integration…), and by explaining the challenges to this ideology in the post-colonial context. Part conceptual analysis and part cultural overview, this lecture will be of interest to all students of contemporary French society, at Sixth-Form and University levels alike. The talk is delivered in English.
